Have you ever looked around your workplace and thought, “I know I’m capable of more… but how do I get there?”
Whether you’re dreaming of becoming a leader, starting a business, or navigating a career transition, one thing is certain: confidence doesn’t magically appear. It’s built through action.
On this episode of the Second Act Success Podcast, I sat down with Sairan Aqrawi, an engineering leadership strategist, executive coach, speaker, and mentor who has spent decades helping professionals, especially women, become stronger leaders and build high-performing teams.
Her message is simple but powerful: Don’t wait for permission. Create your own opportunity.

Leadership Begins Long Before Someone Gives You the Title
Many women believe they’ll finally feel like a leader once they receive the promotion. Sairan believes the opposite.
Leadership starts the moment you begin preparing yourself for the next opportunity, even before anyone notices.
Early in her engineering career, Sairan found herself leading major projects for organizations like Boeing and Homeland Security. Walking into rooms filled almost entirely with experienced men could have been intimidating, but instead of focusing on what she lacked, she focused on preparation.
She knew her projects.
She knew the numbers.
She knew the solutions.
Confidence came from competence. That’s an important lesson for anyone considering a career change, pursuing leadership, or even starting a business. Preparation creates confidence.

From Engineer to Leadership Coach: Career Growth, Confidence, & Entrepreneurship with Sairan Aqrawi | #262
Your Career Skills Transfer More Than You Think
One of the biggest fears I hear as a business coach for women is: “What if everything I’ve done in my career has nothing to do with the business I want to start?”
The truth is exactly the opposite. Every career transition brings valuable experience with it.
Leadership.
Communication.
Problem solving.
Organization.
Project management.
Customer service.
Relationship building.
These are skills that transfer into entrepreneurship and nearly every second act career.
Kay’s corporate experience helped her successfully operate a business for decades, even though the industry itself was completely different.
You don’t start from zero when you make a career change. You start from experience.
Work-Life Balance Isn’t the Goal. Work-Life Integration Is.
One of Sairan’s most refreshing perspectives challenged the traditional idea of work-life balance. Instead, she encourages women to focus on work-life integration.
When you’re spending time with your children, be fully present. When you’re working, focus completely on your work. Trying to do everything at once often leaves us feeling exhausted while accomplishing less.
As women navigating careers, families, businesses, and personal goals, this mindset can dramatically reduce burnout and improve fulfillment.
Your Full-Time Job Can Fund Your Future
Many women I coach worry they need to quit their jobs immediately to become entrepreneurs. Sairan disagrees.
She encourages women to think of their current career as the financial foundation that supports their future dreams.
Your salary pays the bills. Your evenings, weekends, or free time can help build the business you’ve always wanted.
This is especially valuable for women considering leaving corporate, building a small business, or exploring entrepreneurship while still maintaining financial security.
Your career doesn’t have to compete with your dream. It can actually fund it.
Stop Calling It a Side Hustle
One of my favorite ideas Sairan shared was replacing the phrase side hustle with side haven. Why? Because your business shouldn’t become another source of stress.
It should become something that energizes you. If your business feels like one more exhausting obligation, it may not be aligned with what truly excites you.
Instead, ask yourself:
- What work gives me energy?
- What could I happily spend hours doing?
- What skills do I already have that I enjoy sharing?
Those answers often point directly toward your next business idea.

Stop Calling It a Side Hustle
As an engineer, Sairan explains entrepreneurship using a building analogy. Every successful business needs three essential pillars:
1. Clarity
Before you build anything, you need a solid foundation. Know where you’re going. Understand your mission, your audience, and why your business matters.
2. Action
Ideas alone don’t build businesses. Consistent action does.
Launch the website. Have the conversations. Offer the service. Take the first step.
3. Consistency
Success doesn’t happen after one client, one speech, or one product launch. Businesses grow because entrepreneurs continue showing up.
Consistency builds trust. Trust builds momentum. Momentum builds businesses.
Why Women Should Stop Waiting Until Everything Is Perfect
One of the biggest themes throughout our conversation was perfectionism.
Too many women believe they need another certification, another degree, more experience, another promotion. Before they’re qualified to pursue something bigger.
The reality is that your experience has already prepared you far more than you realize. Whether you’ve worked in engineering, healthcare, finance, education, marketing, or corporate leadership, you’ve developed skills that transfer into entrepreneurship and leadership.
These skills become the foundation for your second act career.
Your Career Doesn’t End at Midlife. It Evolves.
One of the most encouraging parts of Sairan’s story is her belief that women often discover their greatest purpose later in life.
After spending years building careers and raising families, many women finally reach a point where they begin asking: “What do I want?”
That’s not selfish. That’s growth.
Your midlife career transition isn’t about starting over. It’s about using everything you’ve learned to build something even better. Whether that’s becoming a speaker, coach, consultant, author, entrepreneur, or leader, your next chapter is built on the foundation you’ve already created.
If you’re thinking about a career change, starting a business, pursuing entrepreneurship, or creating your own second act career, this episode is filled with practical advice and inspiration to help you move forward with confidence.
